A Radiographer is an allied healthcare professional and an important member of a diagnostic team from whom any subsequent patient treatments are dependent on. Also known as a Medical Imaging Technologist, Diagnostic Radiographer, and Radiologic Technologist, a Radiographer operates X-ray machinery and other imaging equipment such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners, computed tomography (CT), and ultrasound, to produce radiographic images of human body part/s for use in the diagnosis and the planning for treatment of an injury or disease.
Radiographers work in collaboration with Radiologists who are responsible for interpreting images and writing diagnostic reports to referring doctors. They also work with other healthcare specialists and medical practitioners in hospitals, clinics, medical laboratories, and nursing homes.
The job of a Radiographer can be challenging, yet varied, considering its different specialist fields and thus, offering wide career prospects:
- Angiography – contrasted x-ray imaging of blood vessels
- Fluoroscopy – real-time and moving to the image of internal body structures using a fluoroscope
- Computed Tomography (CT) – series of cross-sectional x-ray imaging from different angles of the body
- Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) – body imaging using a magnetic field and radiofrequency pulses did specifically for a knee injury, brain, and spine, and other internal body structures
- Trauma Radiography – specialised imaging usually associated with emergency cases that require immediate diagnostic imaging
- Mobile Radiography – imaging often used for emergency case procedures
A tertiary qualification in medical radiation science is required to become a Radiographer, either at an undergraduate level upon completion of year 12 or at the graduate level by earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Imaging Science or Health Science discipline. A one-year paid actual work placement under a ‘’supervised practice’’ is also a pre-requisite for accreditation with the Australian Institute of Radiography (AIR) and thereafter, the eligibility to apply for registration with the Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia (MRPBA) for the full authority to practice locally.
- Completed studies in Diagnostic Radiography
- AIR Accreditation and current Australian Registration as a Radiographer
- Minimum of 2 years’ relevant clinical experience within the last 5 years
Desirable:
Training and/or work experience in a wide range of modalities and specialties, other than general radiography
